Electricity
Lincoln Electric System
, a publicly owned utility, serves approximately 200 square miles within Lancaster County. Monthly residential minimum charge for electricity is $7.80. Winter rate is 5.5 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 900 kilowatt hours and 3.65 cents for each additional kilowatt hour. Summer rate is 8.16 cents per kilowatt hour, you can earn a summer conservation credit of $1.50 per month if you use less then 10.0 kw/h per day.

Norris Public Power District serves other parts of Lancaster County, including the communities of Agnew, Davey, Denton, Firth, Hallam, Holland, Kramer, Malcolm, Martell, Princeton, Raymond, Roca, Rokeby, and Sprague. Nebraska City Utitlities serves Panama and Bennet.

Natural Gas
Aquila
's Lincoln residential customers pay $11 per month, plus the cost of gas, which varies depending on the season. Change of service fee is $26.

Water & Sewer
The city of Lincoln provides water service. Residential rates are designed to promote conservation: the more water you use, the higher the price per unit of water.

One unit equals 748 gallons. The first 16 units cost 93 cents per unit, the next 30 units are $1.28 per unit and anything in excess of that costs $1.89 per unit.

Most single-family residential customers pay a $2.95 monthly service charge. Service charges for multi-unit residences depend upon the number of meters or units.

The wastewater fee for residential customers is based on winter water usage; the customer pays only for water sent into the waste water lines. All customers pay $1.205 per unit. If you use 20 units of water during a winter billing period, your sewer usage fee would be $24.10 plus tax and service charge.

Telephone
Three companies and many cellular companies offer telephone service in Lincoln.

Alltel charges $17.50 for basic monthly residential service, plus a federally mandated subscriber line charge of $4.96 per month. Installation fee is $29. A deposit may be required, depending on previous service history. Alltel offers a set monthly rate for $37.50 for unlimited local long distance calls.

NT&T also charges $17.50 for basic monthly residential service. They also offer a full line of services, including call forwarding, caller ID, etc. Switching is free. Long Distance is offered at a rate of 7 cents per minute.

Time Warner Cable offers residential digital telephone service in Lincoln. Customers have unlimited local and long distance calling within the United States and Canada. Customers with cable and Internet service pay $39.95 per month; customers with cable or Internet service pay $44.95 per month and customers with only digital phone service pay $49.95 per month. All of the fees cover unlimited local and long distance calling, caller ID, call waiting and call waiting/caller ID.

Garbage
Private companies pick up and carry trash to the Bluff Road Landfill. Residential rates range from $14 to $20, depending on whether the trash is removed once or twice a week. Most haulers charge extra for yard waste, $9 to $11 per month for April - November; fall-only leaf collection, October and November, is $9 to $11 per month. Yard waste must be seperated from garbage from April through November.

Senior citizen/low volume discounts are available from some haulers. Garbage is not picked up on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Do-it-yourself trash removal. Residents may take their own trash to North 48th Street Small Vehicle Transfer Station, 5101 N 48th St. using cars, trucks, pickups, vans or other small vehicles. Grass and leaves, brush, appliances, metals, vehicle batteries, used motor oil and tires must be sorted out and placed in designated areas of the site for recycling. Appliances, waste oil and lead acid batteries can be recycled at other locations for less expensive fees.

All loads entering the transfer station must be covered. Fees are $2.50 for an automobile; $10 for pickups or vans; $16 for pickups and trailers; $12.50 for automobile with trailer.

Cable Television
Time Warner Cable
has the cable franchise in Lincoln. Basic cable channels 2 through 80, costs $49.15 per month. The digital tier is an additional $6.95 per month plus the cost of equipment. Also available are digital video recorder service for another $4.95 per month. A Latino tier is available for $4.95 per month. There are 2 high definition television tiers, one for no additional charge and one for $6.95 per month.

Television service is also offered via satellite by DirecTV and Dish Network. DirecTV's service packages begin at $44.95, which includes the local channels package for the Lincoln area. Dish Network's service packages begin at $19.95 (or $24.95 with local channels).

Newspaper
Lincoln Journal Star
offers delivery of its daily newspaper. They offer many different subscription packages for home delivery.
